Artificial Intelligence in Publishing

Policy Statement

AI tools, including large language models, may not be listed as authors, as they cannot take responsibility for a work's content or accountability, consistent with PJN's authorship criteria (Section 4). Authors who use AI tools in the writing process, in image or figure generation, or in analysis must disclose this use in the Methods or Acknowledgments section, describing which tool was used and for what purpose, and remain fully responsible for the accuracy and integrity of any AI-assisted content, including checking for fabricated references or data.

Reviewers and editors likewise may not upload unpublished manuscripts or other confidential editorial material to public or unauthorized generative-AI platforms, to protect author confidentiality and data protection.

1. Scope and Applicability

This policy applies to all authors, reviewers, and editors, for any use of AI tools in connection with a PJN submission, from manuscript preparation through review.

2. Definitions

AI Tool: Software, including large language models, capable of generating or assisting with text, images, or analysis.

AI Disclosure: A statement identifying which AI tool was used and how, included in the Methods or Acknowledgments section.
